Editorial Policy

This page explains how DomainFinch produces its guides, name ideas and comparisons, and the rules we follow to keep them accurate and independent.

Updated October 2026 · By the DomainFinch editorial team

Key takeaways
  • DomainFinch checks technical claims against primary sources such as ICANN policies, IANA registries, IETF standards and registry or registrar documentation.
  • DomainFinch avoids quoting dollar figures because prices change constantly, and instead tells readers to check current first-year and renewal pricing.
  • Registrar and comparison pages are reviewed at least quarterly, technical guides twice a year, and name lists and extension pages at least yearly.
  • Rankings, recommendations and best-for labels on DomainFinch are never paid for, and affiliate status never changes availability results or result order.
  • Readers can report errors through the footer contact link, and substantive corrections are noted with a date at the end of the page.

What we publish

DomainFinch publishes three kinds of content alongside its tools: practical guides about choosing, buying and managing domain names; name idea lists such as our industry name ideas and style hubs; and comparisons, including extension profiles, TLD comparisons and our registrar guide.

How guides are produced

  • Primary sources first. Technical claims about domains are checked against primary sources where possible: ICANN policies, IANA registries, IETF standards and registry or registrar documentation.
  • Tested, not paraphrased. Where a guide describes a process, such as transferring a domain or reading an RDAP record, we walk through it ourselves.
  • No invented numbers. Prices change constantly, so we avoid quoting dollar figures and tell you to check current first-year and renewal pricing instead.
  • Plain language. We explain jargon on first use and keep advice specific enough to act on.

How name lists are produced

Name ideas are generated with the same techniques as our domain name generator (keyword combinations, blends, prefixes, suffixes and invented words) and then edited by hand. We remove names that are hard to spell or pronounce, obviously tied to existing well-known brands, or offensive in common languages. Availability shown on these pages is checked live in your browser when you view them, so it is never a stale snapshot. Including a name is not legal advice: always run your own trademark search before using one.

Review and update cadence

  • Registrar and comparison pages are reviewed at least quarterly, and sooner when a provider announces a significant policy or product change.
  • Technical guides and the methodology page are reviewed at least twice a year and whenever our checking method changes.
  • Name lists and extension pages are reviewed at least yearly, and extension data is refreshed when IANA or a registry changes it.

Pages show a "last updated" date, which we change only when the content has actually been reviewed or edited.

Affiliate independence

DomainFinch is free and is funded by affiliate links to registrars and hosting companies, and by ads. When you buy through some links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Our rules:

  • Rankings, recommendations and "best for" labels are never paid for and cannot be bought.
  • Companies we have no affiliate relationship with are included when they deserve to be.
  • Affiliate status never changes availability results or the order of search results.
  • Advertisers have no input into editorial content, and ads are visually separated from it.

Corrections policy

If you spot an error, whether a wrong fact, an outdated policy, a broken link or an incorrect availability result, please tell us through the contact link in the footer and include the page and what you believe is wrong. We aim to review reports within a few working days. Substantive corrections are made promptly and noted at the end of the affected page with the date; minor fixes such as typos are made without a note.

FAQ

Are DomainFinch rankings paid?

No. We may earn affiliate commissions when you buy through some links, but no company can pay to be included, ranked higher or labelled as a recommendation.

How often are guides updated?

Registrar and comparison pages are reviewed at least quarterly, technical guides at least twice a year, and name lists and extension pages at least yearly, plus whenever something significant changes.

Are the names on name idea pages available?

Availability is checked live in your browser when you view the page, so it reflects the current state. Always confirm at the registrar and run a trademark search before committing.

How do I report a mistake?

Use the contact link in the footer, name the page and describe the error. We review reports within a few working days and note substantive corrections on the page.
