Domain name statistics 2026
99.7% of all two-letter .com domains are registered, and 99.8% of three-letter ones. Length is the cheat code: 84.2% of pronounceable 5-letter .coms are taken, but only 41.2% of 6-letter ones. Adding one letter frees up about 58.8% of names.
DataAvailable short domains
615 unregistered short and one-word names, re-checked live.
MethodHow we check availability
DNS + RDAP, explained for developers and journalists.
Why we publish data
Most "domain statistics" online are recycled registry press releases. We measure availability directly: the same way our search tool works, at scale, with the method and raw counts published so anyone can check or reuse them.
Journalists, researchers and bloggers can use the charts and numbers freely with a link back. For a custom cut of the data, contact us.
How the studies are run
Every study samples domain names with a fixed random seed, sends one DNS query per name to public resolvers, and records whether the name is delegated in the domain name system. Failed lookups are retried, and anything still unanswered is excluded and reported, never guessed. The script ships with the site's source code, so anyone can rerun it and compare results.
What's next
We rerun the availability index every quarter, so you can see how fast short names disappear over time. Planned additions include availability by language, by industry keyword, and across more country-code extensions. Want a specific cut of the data? Tell us and we may add it to the next run.
