.com vs .xyz

Is .com or .xyz better?

Quick answerFor a business that depends on customer trust, .com is clearly the better choice. .xyz is a legitimate, inexpensive extension that works well for side projects, creative work, Web3 communities and experiments, and Google does not penalize it. Choose .xyz when cost and availability matter more than instant recognition; otherwise default to .com.

Choose .com if…

  • You run a business where customers enter payment or personal details
  • You rely on cold email and want to avoid extra scrutiny from spam filters
  • You want a name that reads as established to older or less technical visitors

Choose .xyz if…

  • You are testing an idea and want a cheap name you can drop later
  • You are building a Web3, crypto or creative community that already uses .xyz
  • You want a quirky or alphabet-themed brand where the extension is part of the joke

The details

.xyz became one of the most registered new extensions, helped by Alphabet choosing abc.xyz for its corporate site. Its low first-year pricing made it popular for experiments, and that same cheapness also attracted bulk registrations by spammers. As a result, some email filters and security tools have historically applied extra caution to inexpensive new TLDs, .xyz included. A clean, well-configured domain can still deliver mail fine, but it may need more warming up than a .com.

For search, there is no inherent penalty: Google treats .xyz like any other generic TLD. The bigger question is how your visitors feel when they see it. Developers and crypto users barely notice; a retiree clicking a link in a text message might hesitate.

If you start on .xyz, check the renewal price, not just the promotional first year, and set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC from day one. Should the project grow into a real business, buy the .com and move to it with 301 redirects, keeping the .xyz forwarding so old links survive.

.com vs .xyz FAQ

Is .xyz a legitimate domain?

Yes. .xyz is an ICANN-approved generic TLD used by many real companies and projects, including Alphabet's abc.xyz. Like any cheap extension it has also been used by spammers.

Does Google penalize .xyz domains?

Google has said new gTLDs like .xyz are treated like any other generic TLD, with no built-in ranking penalty. Site quality and reputation determine how it performs.

Will emails from a .xyz domain go to spam?

Not necessarily, but some filters have been stricter with low-cost TLDs. Proper SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and a gradual sending ramp help a lot.
