What is a domain availability checker?

Quick answerA domain availability checker tells you whether a domain name is free to register. DomainFinch queries public DNS for each name, then confirms with the registry's RDAP server: a "not found" response means the domain is likely available, while a record shows it is registered, including the registrar and dates.

Most checkers show you one extension and then try to sell you hosting. DomainFinch checks every major extension in parallel, straight from public DNS and the registries' own RDAP servers. If a name is taken, you can see who it is registered with, when it was created and the day it expires, so you know whether waiting or making an offer is realistic.

Availability is checked from your browser, so your searches aren't stored on our servers. That matters because some low-quality sites register the names people type in.

How to use the domain availability checker

  1. Type a name, keywords or a short description of your idea.
  2. Scan the live results: green means available and confirmed with the registry.
  3. Save favourites with the star. They stay on this device, no account needed.
  4. Compare registrar prices and register the one you love.

Domain availability checker FAQ

How accurate is this domain availability checker?

Each name is checked twice: a DNS lookup gives an instant answer, then the official registry (via RDAP) confirms it. Names marked "Available" have no registration record. Premium or reserved names may still carry special pricing at the registrar.

Why does a domain show as available here but premium at the registrar?

Registries reserve some short or dictionary names as "premium" and charge more for them. They are unregistered, so they show as available, but the price is set by the registry.

Can I check many domains at once?

Yes. Use the free Bulk Domain Checker to paste up to 500 names or domains and download the results as a CSV.

Is this domain availability checker free?

Yes, DomainFinch is 100% free with no sign-up and no limits. We may earn a commission if you buy through a partner registrar, at no extra cost to you.

Do you store my searches?

No. Checks run in your browser against public DNS and registry servers, and your saved names stay on your device.
