Choose .com if…
- You want customers to trust your site on the first visit
- You depend on word-of-mouth referrals or verbal recommendations
- You can find a good .com, even a slightly longer one
Choose .biz if…
- Your exact business name is taken on .com and the .biz is open
- You want a defensive registration to stop others using your name
- Your brand embraces the 'biz' word, such as a playful or retro identity
The details
.biz arrived in 2001 as an explicitly commercial alternative to an increasingly crowded .com. It never caught up, and over the years it picked up a reputation, fair or not, for spammy or low-effort sites. Today it is a legitimate, unrestricted extension that Google treats neutrally, but the perception gap with .com is wide.
The practical problem is that people who hear 'Smith Plumbing' will try smithplumbing.com, not .biz. If that .com belongs to another plumber, you are effectively advertising for them. For a local or small business, a slightly longer .com, perhaps with a town name or a service word added, often beats an exact-match .biz.
.biz is still useful in a support role. Registering your .biz and pointing it at your main site blocks copycats cheaply. If you have no good .com option at all, compare .biz with a country-code or industry extension too, since a local .co.uk or a descriptive new gTLD can carry more credibility in some markets.
.com vs .biz FAQ
Is a .biz domain bad?
No, it is a legitimate generic TLD. Its main drawbacks are lower recognition and an older association with spam, which can reduce visitor trust compared with .com.
Does .biz affect Google rankings?
Google treats .biz as a neutral generic TLD, so it does not inherently rank lower. Content quality, links and user signals matter more.
Is .biz only for businesses?
.biz is intended for business or commercial use, but there is no meaningful eligibility check. Any person or organization can register one.
